Though no simple paragraph could describe the totality of any congregation, there are many qualities that touch on the faith we intentionally seek to live and share. We consider ourselves deeply Christ-centered and value the thoughts and theological spectrum of the individual faith journey. As the Senior Minister, I know the people of First Christian to be powerfully engaged in the search for authentic and loving community. Within these relationships, we are called to be critically thoughtful, passionately devoted, biblically grounded and spiritually open. In the words of the Apostle Paul, translated by Eugene Peterson, we are committed to "trusting steadily in God, hoping unswervingly, and loving extravagantly."
As a worshipping community, we gather at 8:15 for a more intimate worship experience and again at 10:00 for a traditional service of word, prayer, song, and sacrament. Christian Education opportunities for all ages run from 9:00 – 9:45. Our professionally staffed nursery opens at 8:45 and closes at 11:45 pm. We celebrate communion every Sunday at both services and give thanks for magnificent choirs and extensive music program that highlights our later service.
Located in the midst of great geographic and cultural diversity, we are inspired by both the need and the gifts that surround us. Through our Safe Haven day shelter, we follow the Christ by serving breakfast and lunch every Thursday, and half the year Tuesday and Thursday to the hungry in our community. We serve between 80-100 each day we are open, and are supported by Fairfax County who provides nursing care for our guests every Thursday (both medical and psychiatric) as well as the time and talents of a mental health professional. If you would like to volunteer, please contact us in the link provided. Many other outreach opportunities drive our passion for service as well.
We would love to have you join us in worship, fellowship and service as we seek to bear witness to the tremendous love of God known to us through Jesus, the living Christ in our midst. May the peace of Christ be with you!
Rev. Kathleen Kline Chesson, Senior Minister
